BMW Electro-Mechanical Parking Brake Repair & Recondition Service
This service is for BMW models such as the X5 0r X6, with are fitted with the Electro-Mechanical Parking Brake (EMF). Also called the Electric Parking Brake (EPB) system.
Clients often find themselves in situations where the brake suddenly stops functioning. In some cases, the brake is locked and won’t release or it appears to be ceased. In these scenarios the vehicle will not budge and the clients are stranded.
Reasons Why the Electric Parking Brake Fails?
These are the most common parts of the EPB system which fail when the brake stops working:
- The brake switch on the console is faulty
- The wiring system fails
- The electric brake needs to be re-calibrated
- The electric brake actuator fails
NB: Know Where The Electric Parking Brake Emergency Release Is Situated
Unfortunately, most people believe this saying “When everything else fails then read the manual”. This may not be pragmatic when electric parking brake stops working and you are stranded on the side of the highway or in an area you don’t feel safe.
The first thing we suggest is you call someone you can trust to come and assist you.
The second is – Ensure the vehicle can’t roll away by placing a brick behind one or several tyres.
Now locate the Emergency Brake Release in the boot (X5 or X6). It is situated near the left rear taillight. You will need a screwdriver or pair of pliers to assist you in pulling the cable loop until the brake releases. Sometimes the brake cable won’t release and it will need to be severed.
