BMW X5 DPF Blockage Caused Complete Turbo Failure
Before we go further – this situation is Completely Avoidable!
Just recently a client had a massive problem with their BMW X5 M5.0d when the car started to perform very poorly. The DPF (diesel particulate filter) warning light was on as well. They took their car to the agents for diagnosis. They were told the car needed 3 new turbochargers which totalled R177,000 as well as a new DPF unit for +- R50,000 = R227,000.
Understandably, the client was in a state of shock.
At this point, they reached out to us for help.
We ran diagnostics to verify the root cause of the problem which was “no boost pressure”. This was followed by the physical inspection which clearly indicated the DPF was completely blocked which in turn, caused damage to all 3 turbos. We advised our client the best course of action was to recondition the turbos and install a new DPF unit (the existing one was beyond repair).
Our estimate for the turbo recon (and related work) amounted to R89,000 and R50,000 for the DPF with the total being R139,000 – a saving of R88,000!
Our prices included all-new feed pipes, gaskets, air filters, oil filters, new BMW oil and full service – the client happily gave the go-ahead.
DPF (diesel particulate filter) Failure is Preventable
The truth of the matter is this type of catastrophic failure can be easily prevented. The DPF plays an important role in minimising the carbon emissions from the exhaust system. Unfortunately, short distance driving and the lack of preventative maintenance cause the DPF to become clogged which then causes damage to other engine systems.
One way to stop being caught with a massive bill like this is to arrange for your DPF to be regularly checked (approx. every 40,000 km).
